Question: I've bought acreage with some woodland on it. How do I know how much it is worth and how to manage it?
Answer: The forests of Kentucky provide a tremendous value to the economy of the state. Oak, maple, hickory, walnut, ash, cherry and beech trees cover nearly half the state. Trees of value provide monetary value to the forest owner.
Trees are a renewable product. With proper management they can be a continued asset for years.
Often the landowner is not knowledgeable on the condition or marketability of individual stands. The Kentucky Division of Forestry, the University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service and private forest consultants can help provide plans that are suited to the landowner's needs and the proper management of the forest.
At 5:30 p.m. Jan. 30 at McConnell Springs, there will be a Kentucky Woodland Owner Seminar to assist landowners with management questions. Topics will include alternative forest crops, forest economics, future trends, forest health, timber pricing, wildlife opportunities and several other items of interest. The cost is $5 a person. Contact your local Cooperative Extension Service for further details. |
