Prices for manufactured goods, raw materials slip |
2006/1/9
Prices for manufactured goods at the factory gate and raw materials prices were down in November on a second month of declines in gasoline and fuel oil prices, Statistics Canada said today.
Prices charged by manufacturers, as measured by the industrial product price index, were down 0.6% from October to November with lower prices for petroleum products and lumber leading factors in the decrease.
The index, which uses 1997 as its baseline figure of 100, stood at 111.3 in November, down from October’s revised level of 112.0.
The 12-month change in the index was 2.9%, up from October’s year-over-year increase of 1.5%, as prices for petroleum and chemical products remained higher than a year ago.
Petroleum and coal products prices declined 8.7% compared to October, the largest decrease since May 2003. Excluding petroleum and coal product prices, the index would have increased 0.3% rather than decreasing 0.6%.
Lumber and other wood products decreased two%, the result of lower prices for particleboard and softwood type plywood.
The raw materials price index fell 1.7% from October to November, after a 1.5% decline the previous month on price drops in mineral fuels, vegetable products and non-metallic minerals.
Compared to November 2004, raw materials cost factories 12.1% more, up from the 12-month change of 8.2% in October.
The raw materials price index stood at 147.9, down from a revised level of 150.5 in October. |
