Crews hope rain douses forest fire
2005/11/24

QUINCY TOWNSHIP ?Heavy rain today is expected to extinguish a suspicious fire that has burned 25 acres of forest in Quincy Township.

Fire crews brought the fire under control Monday night, according to Southern Michaux Forest fire warden Steve Biesecker.

Forestry crews on Tuesday worked a containment line on the west flank of the fire.

Gary Zimmerman, assistant district forester for Michaux State Forest, said he suspects arson. State fire investigator Robert McJilton is investigating.
It would be the second incendiary fire in Michaux in as many days. A fire set Sunday evening on the side of a road south of South Mountain burned half an acre, Zimmerman said.

The most recent fire was discovered around 9:30 p.m. Monday off Oak Road, about two miles south of Pa. 233 near the ruins of a stone cabin. Foresters previously have had trouble in the area with partying teen-agers, according to Zimmerman.

The fire damaged state forest and private land from which most of the trees had been cleared, Zimmerman said.

Assisting Monday night were firefighters from South Mountain, Waynesboro, Mont Alto, Fayetteville, Marion and New Franklin and forest fire crews from the Piney Mountain Strike Team and Southern Michaux crew.
