Few Young People Becoming Loggers |
2005/11/23
A study by the University of Idaho shows that nearly two thirds of all loggers in the Northwest are now 40 years or older.
Younger people apparently aren't being attracted to the industry.
Some of the reasons include globalization in the timber market, the high cost of insurance and fewer timber sales on federal land.
But for communities in the forests of Idaho, Montana and Washington, it could have severe economic implications: Rather than staying home and helping bolster the local workforce, kids may be moving away and doing something else.
Peter Griessmann, the 47 year old district forest manager in Washington, says there's a growing sense of urgency to encourage more young people to enter the industry.
