Farm forestry ¨C plant now!
2005/11/21

Over a thousand Mayo farmers have chosen forestry as an enterprise on their land in the last ten years says Noel Kennedy, Forestry Development Officer, Teagasc. With forestry now more attractive than ever and farmers looking to the future Teagasc and the Forest Service invite you to a forestry information meeting in the Curam Centre, Claremorris on Wednesday, 23rd November, at 8 p.m.

Why should I consider planting now?

Farmers can have their own land planted at no cost using an extremely attractive planting grant. They can then draw down an annual tax-free forestry premium for twenty years.
In addition farmers can now draw down their full Single Farm Payment even if planting up to 50% of their land (conditions attached).
A Farm Forest can provide a significant and guaranteed source of tax-free income, enhance shelter, provide wood energy and a range of other environmental benefits.
There is uncertainty as to the level of grants and premiums for new entrants to forestry post 2006. What we do know for certain is that:
¨C The current planting grants and annual premiums are available to the end of 2006.
¨C Annual premium payments under the current Afforestation scheme are guaranteed for 20 years to farmers and 15 years to non-farmers.
¨C Farmers who plant can expect to receive an average annual tax-free premium of €400 per hectare for 20 years.
¨C The Planting grant covers 100% of the cost of planting and establishing the forest.
