Government blamed for forestry problems |
2005/11/7
Another poor 12 months ahead is predicted for New Zealand's forestry industry.
Eight thousand jobs have already been lost in the nursing, planting and pruning industry because it is just not profitable to spend time and money on it.
The Kyoto Forestry Association is concerned that no new trees will be on the horizon and Roger Dickie from the association says a lack of investment could be disastrous.
He says there needs to be a steady growth in the industry in order to give people confidence to invest in it; he says the Government's intention to take the Kyoto protocol carbon credits from the rightful forest owners is to make people lose interest in the industry as an investment.
Mr Dickie is worried the country will suffer the environmental consequences of global warming in 20 years' time when catastrophic unseasonal weather could impact on employment, exports and the environment.
