LISBON (AFP) - Firefighters in Portugal brought seven blazes under control overnight that had flared up again during high daytime temperatures, but the risk remained high.
"There are no active fires," the national service of firefighters and civil protection said Saturday.
As Portugal faces one of its most destructive fire seasons in a decade, more than 150 firefighters were still extinguishing flames and on surveillance duty Saturday, they added.
The fire risk was "maximum" in three northern districts and "very high" in nine other districts in the north and centre.
Temperatures were expected to be slightly higher Saturday at over 30 degrees Celsius (86 Fahrenheit).
Since Wednesday, firefighters have gradually brought under control dozens of forest fires which have been raging for two weeks in the centre and north of the country.
The flames have destroyed at least 180,000 hectares (450,000 acres) of forest and farmland blackened by flames so far this year, according to official estimates.
Wildfires have killed 15 people, including 10 firefighters, destroyed more than 100 homes and nearly 500 farm buildings, and forced the temporary evacuation of dozens of villages since January. |
