Wood products company brings new jobs to county |
2005/8/24
TAZEWELL ¨C Almost a year¡'s work paid off for Tazewell County leaders last week with the announcement of a $4 million-plus wood products plant.
Governor Mark Warner¡'s office announced Aug. 18 that Clinch River Forest Products had decided to locate a new-technology mill in the county. The company is in the early stages of constructing the $4.35 million facility at Maxwell.
The plant will be located behind the vacant Pepsi warehouse on U.S. Route 460 between Pounding Mill and Tazewell.
¡°Clinch River Forest Products¡'decision to locate this new facility in Tazewell County is exciting news,¡± said Governor Warner. ¡°This project is a perfect complement to the growing cluster of wood product industries in Southwest Virginia. It is especially gratifying to see local entrepreneurs reinvest in their community.¡±
Headquartered in Tazewell County, Clinch River Forest Products is a privately held corporation founded by four experienced sawmill owners and timber growers from Southwest Virginia. The company will process timber harvested in Tazewell and surrounding counties using new technology that removes less sawdust in the manufacturing process, thereby increasing the yield from each log sawed.
County Economic Development Coordinator Margie Bandy said the county had been working with the company since last winter. The Virginia Economic Development Partnership worked with Tazewell County and the Virginia Coalfield Economic Development Authority to secure the project for Virginia. Governor Warner approved a $150,000 grant from the Governor¡'s Opportunity Fund to assist Tazewell County with the project. The Virginia Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission approved $200,000 in Tobacco Region Opportunity Funds for the project. The Virginia Department of Business Assistance will provide training assistance through its Workforce Services Program.
Bandy said anyone interested in applying for one of the 102 jobs the company will provide should contact the Virginia Employment Commission. This is the fourth major economic development announcement the county has had in the last 18 months.
Clinch River¡'s announcement is the latest in a series of manufacturing or economic development successes for the county since early 2004.
Blue Ridge Wood Products moved into the former Woodtech veneer plant in Falls Mills in mid 2004, while state corrections officials broke ground in July for the Tazewell County Correctional Center in Pocahontas. Pyott-Boone Electronics in August closed a loan with the Virginia Coalfield Economic Development Authority for a $400,000 plant expansion.
