Vietnam, Laos Sign Agriculture And Forestry Cooperation Pact
2005/8/8

HANOI, Aug 5 Asia Pulse - Vietnam and Laos have signed a cooperation accord on agriculture and forestry and rural development for 2005 and orientations for the 2006-10 period.
The signing took place during a working visit to Laos by the Vietnamese Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Cao Duc Phat, from Aug. 3-6 as guest of the Lao Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, Sian Saphangthong.

Under the 2005 cooperation programme, the two sides agreed to jointly carry out and monitor irrigation projects and a programme to grow high-yield corn in Laos.

Vietnam will also help Laos continue to cultivate its agricultural production and rural development models in several localities and train its workforce.

Cooperation orientation for the 2006-10 period has been designed in conformity with an agreement on economic, cultural, scientific and technical cooperation for the 2001-2010 period reached by the two governments and a cooperation agreement signed by the two ministries in April, 2004 in Hanoi.

Vietnam and Laos will continue to design and implement projects to develop agriculture and forestry, irrigation networks and rural areas so as to ensure national food security and environmental protection.

The two sides also agreed to boost research cooperation and technology transfers and create favourable conditions for business circles to expand cooperation in this domain.

They also reached agreement on a list of cooperation projects to be submitted to the two governments for approval in 2006.

Lao Prime Minister Boungnang Volachit received Minister Cao Duc Phat.

The Lao leader spoke highly of the effective cooperation between the two ministries in recent years, particularly Vietnam's assistance to food production projects in Lao mountainous localities and technology transfers, rice strain development, and cacao and cashew cultivation projects in southern provinces.
