Timber retailers pine after native woods |
2005/7/15
Home Depot, the biggest world timber retailer is protecting the Auricaria woods in Chile. The company is buying around 10% of the yearly Chilean wood exports. In the past few years, Home Depot forwarded petitions to the government to stop the harvesting of endangered woods in Asia and Africa. The wood was to be exported in America. It even made a pact with the Chilean landowners by which the last took the engagement to stop converting their native woods in “farm trees”. Until 1999, Home Depot were criticized by organizations which protect the environment that there are using woods no matter of its origin (if it is legally harvested or not). Fearing that these protest might influence the public and result in a decrease of sales, Home Depot initiated a series of international actions to protect the environment. They even created a special post to initiate and implement these projects. The name of this post is environmental global project manager and the person that took this job is Mr. Jarvis. His action had positive effects on Indonesian and Chilean woods. Besides, 95% of Home Depot woods imports are coming from North America. Jarvis said that these initiatives have a relatively small cost compared to their turnover of 91 billion dollars, registered last year. |
