Lumber Imports to be subject to inspection and quarantine from Dec. 1 |
2004/10/13
Taipei (CNA) Sixty-one lumber products will be subject to inspection and quarantine before entering Taiwan from Dec. 1 as part of the government's efforts to avert invasion by dangerous exotic pests and insects, agriculture officials said Tuesday. It will mark the first time in Taiwan's history that lumber imports are subject to inspection and quarantine. The announcement came amid concerns about the infestation of red fire ants in some parts of the island. Officials from the Cabinet-level Council of Agriculture (COA) said the items to be subject to inspection will mainly be large pieces of uncut wood and lumber products. The COA's Bureau of Plant and Animal Health Inspection and Quarantine has worked out regulations governing inspection and quarantine of the 61 listed items, the officials said, adding that the bureau will hold a series of seminars in October and November to help local lumber importers understand the new regulations. In terms of the new regulation, about 836,000 tons of uncut wood and 682,000 tons of lumber products imported in 2003 had to be inspected. |
