TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Hurricanes this year have taken a heavy toll on Florida's forestry industry.
The Florida Division of Forestry estimates the storms caused nearly $400 million in damage to the timber industry.
Officials said the damage is widespread.
The Florida Forestry Association reports 2.3 million acres of forests have been altered or destroyed by the four hurricanes and Tropical Storm Bonnie.
A spokesman for the state Division of Forestry says salvaging and clearing all the downed trees will require a massive effort.
Hurricane Ivan alone is blamed for causing 130 million of damage in northwestern Florida. All those downed trees have created a giant glut on the market. |
