The sky’s the limit on Saturday 27 March as the Forestry Commission stages a cosmic event in Hamsterley Forest. Novice star gazers are being invited to a “Nightwatch” in the 4,000 acre beauty spot, near Bishop Auckland, from 6.30pm. Experts from Sunderland Astronomical Society will be on hand to give people chance to peer through powerful telescopes at celestial wonders such as Jupiter, Saturn and the first quarter moon. And rangers will be leading a walk through the twilight to check out forest nightlife as it stirs for action. Kielder Forest has been staging such events for six years, during which time they have become incredibly popular. Last year’s inaugural Nightwatch at Hamsterley attracted over 150 people. Recreation Ranger Robin Lofthouse said: “People are really keen to know more about the night sky and get a look through powerful telescopes. The forest is the perfect location for astronomy, away from the street lights that produce the orange glow over our towns and cities. Together with our nature trek, it’s the perfect way to experience the forest.” Experts will be giving a running commentary on telescopic views and offering tips on how to find out more about astronomy. There will also be the StarLab inflatable planetarium, which will give adults and children a view of the starry sky no matter what the weather. Activities get underway at the visitor centre, a short drive from the A68, from 6.30pm The cost is £3 adults and £2 concessions. Bring warm clothing, sturdy boots and a torch.
