Stora Enso Halts Timber Felling Countrywide |
2008/11/27
Forestry company Stora Enso has called a halt to timber felling across the country.
Pekka T. Rajala, area forestry manager with Stora Enso, says timber stockpiles have expanded considerably, while demand for raw timber for use in factories has declined due to a general slowdown in the paper market.
Timber supplies have also been supplemented by trees felled last summer and during the autumn. Some timber imports from Russia have also augmented stockpiles.
Estimates are that felling and clearing machines will be at a standstill for an average of four weeks.
Rajala says that the work stoppage could affect about 100 forestry machines in south east Finland.
