STEHEKIN, Wash. Firefighters are continuing to protect about two-dozen cabins in the community of Stehekin (stuh-HEE'-kin) from a forest fire burning along Lake Chelan in north central Washington. Fire managers say the Flick Creek fire burned another 275 acres yesterday and has now covered nearly 12 square miles. The fire was started July 26th by a woman burning her diary.
Fire managers are holding a community meeting this afternoon (at four at the Stehekin Community Center) to talk about the fire and evacuations.
Meanwhile, the Columbia Complex fire that has burned 161 square miles in southeast Washington near Dayton is 80 percent contained. A national incident management team is turning over command to a Washington management team.
More than one-thousand firefighters are at the scene, building lines. The fire has destroyed one full-time home and five cabins since it was started August 21st by lightning.
Fire managers expect cooler temperatures and the chance of showers forecast in Washington over the next several days should help control several wildfires. |
